Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Current Management and Utilizing Protein Engineering to Develop an Antidote

Join ACMT on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 12 PM ET for a National Grand Rounds featuring Dr. Jason J. Rose as he examines current approaches to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and emerging strategies for antidote development. A national leader in pulmonary and critical care medicine and physician innovation, Dr. Rose will review the ongoing prevalence of CO poisoning and outline evidence-based management options for affected patients. This session will explore the acute and long-term ramifications for survivors of CO exposure, highlighting persistent neurologic and cardiopulmonary consequences that may follow apparent recovery. Dr. Rose will also discuss novel translational research efforts, including the application of protein engineering to develop targeted antidotal therapies, offering a forward-looking perspective on how innovation may reshape future treatment paradigms for this common and potentially devastating inhalational toxin.

Learning Objectives

  1.  Examine the current prevalence of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  2.  Determine the management options for people who are carbon monoxide poisoned.
  3.   Review the long-term ramifications for survivors of CO poisoning.

About The Series: ACMT's Grand Rounds offer an in-depth and interactive platform for learning and discussion about issues that impact the research and practice of medical toxicology. Experts from within and outside medical toxicology will share their knowledge and experience and highlight areas for collaboration and mutual understanding.

This webinar is for ACMT members only.

Jason J. Rose, MD, MBA, FAHA, ATSF

Chief, Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, Associate Dean, Innovation & Physician Science Development, Associate Professor of Medicine; Director of Faculty Entrepreneurship, Executive Director

University of Maryland School of Medicine; UM-BILD (NIH REACH Hub)

Dr. Jason Rose is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a physician-scientist specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine and inhalational toxicology. He completed undergraduate training in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan, earned his medical degree from Wayne State University, and completed internal medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center, followed by fellowship training in Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Rose’s research in carbon monoxide poisoning has led to the development of novel antidotal therapies, resulting in multiple patents and the co-founding of Globin Solutions, Inc., where he serves as President and CEO. His work has been supported by major funding from the NIH, Department of Defense, and national professional organizations, and he remains actively engaged in advancing translational research and innovation in academic medicine.

Nicholas Nacca, MD, FACMT (Moderator)

Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine

University of Rochester Medical Center

Dr. Nicholas Nacca is the director of Medical Toxicology and Medical Toxicology Fellowship Director at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In addition to being faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine he holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Environmental Medicine. His primary role is staffing the educational and clinical medical toxicology consultation service, with educational responsibilities to medical toxicology fellows, multidisciplinary teams of medical residents, pharmacy residents and students, as well as medical students. He staffs and directs a referral based outpatient Medical Toxicology Clinic.
